The recent winner of an Australian Tourism Award, Seppeltsfield Vineyard Cottage offers the quintessential Barossa experience. Nestled amid old peppercorn and fig trees with views across vineyards and perambulating geese, this meticulously restored 1860s settlers' cottage, with low-beamed ceiling and capacious cellar, is the perfect bolthole. Hosts Sharyn and Peter epitomise country hospitality and stock the cottage with copious Barossa goodies: their own farm eggs and vineyard rosé, bacon and jersey milk, as well as beer from the new boutique Barossa Brewing Company in nearby Greenock.

The Vineyard Cottage seems made for lovers - or very, very close friends. The whole beautiful package invites romance. It is a triumph of loving restoration for its owners... They took the ruins of an 1860's settler's cottage and made it a magnificent blend of the old charm and mod cons.....The bedroom has a king-size iron bed in classical style, large, fluffy white towels and comfy bathrobes. Which is good, as you'll spend a long time in the huge bathroom, with its heated floors and towel rails, restored claw-foot bath (like buried treasure it was being used as a pond outside) and double shower.

The indulgence doesn't end there. A coffee machine, selection of Barossa-based nibbles, breakfast goods and even beers and wine await the visitor.

...it is not just the mod cons they installed that make this vineyard cottage so comfortable. The restoration has ensured not only that this historic home offers all the creature comforts of top-notch accommodation but also that most of its original structure remains in place.

Original mud ceilings are supported by the same heavy wood beams and thick walls that first held it in place. Only the flooring, new windows and heavy curtaining change the ambience of the place from cold settler cottage into first-class romantic accommodation. The bed is king-sized, the bedroom is dark in the morning and the vineyard views from the bathroom make a languish in the bath a morning must.

It is so good you could almost ignore the rest of what the region has to offer......
