Angela Heuzenroeder wrote her book "Barossa Food" after compiling lists of the foods she knew local people had been making for generations. Certain techniques such as smoking, pickling and fermenting and flavour preferences made them typical Barossa cooking. Some of the dishes in Angela's book date back to the 1840s. This history is as important to the Barossa region as its wine history.
Angela recognised:
"....that visitors and locals alike needed to be reminded about the traditional food of the region and the world needed to know about them before they disappeared..... Due to a strong sense of regional identity coming from its distinctive European culture, its shared festivals and its unifying wine industry, the Barossa could lay a very strong claim to having a continuing regional cuisine starting from the earliest white settlement - and was probably the only place in Australia that could do so."
Our dine-in menu is designed to offer guests an opportunity to sample traditional, regional Barossa cuisine by way of a simple home cooked meal based on recipes found in Barossa Food, The Barossa Cookery Book (first published in 1917) as well as more contemporary dishes using Barossa produce, such as in Maggie Beer's recipes.

We are privileged in the Barossa Valley to have access to fresh, locally produced foods.

The Barossa Farmers Market, sisters Ellie and Saskia Beer's Barossa Farm Produce, Hutton Vale Lamb and Linkes Meat Store are just a few of the local treasures where our food can be sourced from.

Our own handmade preserves, jams and pickles aren't bad either! On our 25 acres at Seppeltsfield we are blessed with an array of quince, fig, almond, plum, pear and pommegranite trees.
