Life is never boring in the Barossa – not only are we currently in the middle of the Fringe in the Barossa – a calendar of 30 events including Theatre, Music, Cabaret, Visual Art and Design, Children’s events, Dining, Markets and more, but this morning we were visited by Skywhale!
The 24-metre high and 36-metre long bizarre hybrid creature was launched between Greenock and Seppeltsfield for a short test flight ahead of its appearance at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens this Saturday as part of the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Dark Heart.
Skywhale was commissioned for the Canberra Centenary and created considerable controversy when it was first unveiled, with much debate centring on its “multiple mammaries”.
Her creator, sculptor Patricia Piccinini has described Skywhale as “a magnificent and mysterious creature that literally floats in and out of our world”, saying she sees it “as a generator of wonder, and a creator of discussion”.
It certainly did that this morning when we looked out of our bedroom window and were greeted with this sight! In this image Skywhale is hovering above our vineyard, Cottage and home which is the property in the middle of the photo (located below the basket).
Sometimes we just have to pinch ourselves…
