Anlaby Homestead - a taste of Australian Aristocracy

Food & Wine Touring

Description

Established by the Dutton family in 1839, Anlaby Station is the home of the oldest Merino Stud in South Australia. At its peak in 1904, 14 fulltime gardeners tended the gardens, including a cucumber house!

Surprisingly, Anlaby is located only a 30 minute drive from the Barossa and your cottage. Now our guests can enjoy an exclusive tour with the current owners of the property and rejoice in the painstaking restoration of this incredible piece of history. The Anlaby House and Garden tour includes the principal rooms of the house including the servants work rooms, kitchen, scullery and butler’s pantry.

At the end of the house tour you will have a strong sense of how the family and servants lived and worked there. With approximately 10 acres of garden, a guided walk through these historically listed gardens typically includes the shade house, glass house, walled vegetable garden, rose gardens and terraced lawns. The original carriageway winds past the front of the house and down to the peacock aviary.

The garden is indeed a restoration work in progress and not all in pristine condition. The garden is of the old fashioned “English style” yet located in a dry South Australian climate and this creates challenges that will enthrall any avid gardener!

The House and Garden Tours indeed take you on an historic journey through a step back in time!
