Zanker family at front of Cottage

This unique heritage accommodation in Barossa is on a 25-acre property first settled in 1852 by Christian and Louise Hemmerling, emigrants from Prussia. Christian's sister, who had settled in the region, inspired them to move to South Australia. The couple established their home near Greenock Creek in what is now known as Seppeltsfield, where they raised eight children who attended the local school in Marananga.

In 1878, their daughter Bertha and her husband, Andreas Zanker, moved into the cottage on the property. Andreas worked at the nearby Seppelt Winery for nearly 50 years, rising to head cellarman. The family led a self-sufficient lifestyle, cultivating their fruits and vegetables and keeping livestock.

The history and legacy of this family are captured through photos and stories shared by Edna Stapleton, Rosa's daughter, who fondly recalled visiting her grandparents at the cottage. In honour of Edna, who passed away at 95 in 2011, the house has been restored to preserve its historical essence. Guests staying here can explore this rich heritage and visit the nearby Seppeltsfield Winery, retracing the steps of the Zanker family. The cottage is dedicated to Edna's memory, celebrating her remarkable life and the warmth she brought to this historic place.
